The desk behind the boards

Frozenponddesk began with an argument on a cold evening about whether a browser game could ever feel like running a real hockey club. One of us said no. Another said yes, and pulled up a daily hockey manager on a laptop to prove it. By the end of the night, we had three clubs, two arguments about line combinations and the idea for this site.

We write about free sports and racing management games, the kind where you never touch the puck, the ball or the steering wheel. You make the decisions, the simulation plays them out, and you live with the results. It is a quieter hobby than most gaming, built on patience, notes and the slow pleasure of watching a plan come together.

Every review on this site comes from a real stretch of play. We register free accounts, take the clubs we are given and play through slumps, signings and seasons before writing a word. We check facts against each game’s official pages, and where we are not sure of a detail, we describe the experience rather than inventing a number.

We are based in Canada, so we think a lot about time zones, winter evenings and what a game feels like on a commute. That perspective shapes our advice, especially for live games where race times matter. But the clubs we write about are international, and the managers we meet in their leagues come from everywhere.

01

We stay for the slump

A manager game reveals its character when things go badly. We keep playing through losing streaks and empty bank accounts, because that is where you discover whether a game is fair to a patient free manager.

02

Facts from the source

We check every concrete claim against the game’s official site or a reliable reference. When a detail cannot be confirmed, we describe what playing feels like instead of guessing at numbers.

03

Scores you can argue with

Our four scores are honest and varied. A game can be thrilling and still score modestly on fairness, and we explain each number so readers can disagree with us on the merits.
